AT&T marketing fail

October 19, 2009 – 8:38 am

I will admit my bias here. AT&T Cellular, in one of their previous incarnations, jacked me up on a contract and I haven’t quite felt the same about them since. It may not have even been the same company; AT&T has been so many companies, you know?

I’m at the Auburn/Kentucky game minding my own business when a young lady who can’t do better with a marketing, communications, or journalism degree in this tough economy shows up with a weird backpack that was either meant to be a football or a turtle shell, a cell phone/camera on a tether, and some weird Mad Max lookin’ barcode scanner gizmo in a shoulder shoulder. I thought at first it was the Borg come to assimilate us, but fortunately she was just there to take our picture.

Which we could retrieve if we went to www.myauburnpicture.com. Make note of that URL, I think it’s important to the story later.

So I went there today and entered the code she gave us (that’s what the barcode scanner was for – to assign the unique card code to our picture). This led to another page where I was required to enter my name, e-mail address, CELL PHONE NUMBER and CARRIER, etc. to retrieve the picture. At this point I must admit to the good people of AT&T that I may have entered my information incorrectly. My e-mail address, for example, doesn’t end in example.com, and my cell number is not 334 555-1212.

And then the web site showed me my picture, and started playing a college fight song ring tone.

The LSU fight song.

The Auburn fight song ring tone was #5 on a list of 5 suggested ring tones.

What was that web site again?

Well, it was a pretty decent picture of me and my friend Charlie, even if it was taken with a little cell-phone camera.
